Born in Burlington, Vermont, she studied chemistry at Wellesley College and Brown University and attended medical school at the University of Vermont.
Dr. Cavalli completed a rigorous internal medicine residency at the University of Pittsburgh before starting her dermatology residency in New York City at SUNY Health Sciences Center and dermatology research fellowship at the University of Pennsylvania.
